You may be aware that there is the possibility that the Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) dedicated fund may be tapped to off-set the state’s budget problems. While we realize the need for a balanced budget, most of us see first-hand the benefit of these funds and understand the problems that would arise without them. We encourage you to contact the Governor, along with your Senator and Representative in an effort to discourage reallocation of funds that are dedicated for lake and river enhancement.
Listed below are some bullet points that you may find helpful:
• LARE funds are derived from a fee on boat registrations. The funds are then used in a way that directly benefits those that paid into the fund.
• LARE has a small staff with little overhead.
• Funds are used for watershed improvements, invasive species management and eradication, marine enforcement patrols, and dredging. Without these funds many projects would be stopped and progress could be lost.
• LARE funded project plans and the results of these projects are documented online at http:www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/2364.htm
• Projects are cost-shared promoting local involvement.
• Many other states are looking to copy Indiana’s LARE program due to its success at improving our aquatic resources, lack of overhead, and overall simplicity
• Many small businesses carry out LARE funded projects and would be severely impacted without the presence of these funds.
Please keep in mind that your letter should be short and polite. If you aren’t sure who your representative is go to
