fall meeting and elections
By: jodilozier

September 4th is our fall meeting.  It will be held at 10:00am in the lakeside yard of Ron and Gretna Syzmanski,  413 EMS R4  lane.  Please bring a chair to sit on.  This is Labor Day weekend so we will be keeping the meeting short.  It is also election year.  Please remember that to vote you need to be a member in good standing, having paid your dues.  If you have not yet paid your dues you can submit them anytime or pay them the day of the meeting.
Please consider running for office.  Your help is needed and new ideas are always welcome.  If you are not a full time resident, technology can allow us to work around that so please consider getting involved.  Offices are a two year term and are:  President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer.  If you cannot attend the meeting but would like to vote, a proxy form has been attached.  Fill it out and send it with someone who will be attending the meeting.  Hope to see you there.  Rain location will be at my house, 4 EMS R4H lane.

Summer seems to have sped by this year like a lot of the boats on the lake.  Maybe it was all the ninety degree days which were quite a contrast to last summer’s cooler weather.  Things are winding down for the lake association but I wanted to make you aware of what we are still working on for this year.

FALL MEETING AND ELECTIONS

HOW FAST CAN YOU GO?
I would like to remind you that Ridinger is a 10 MPH lake.  Black and yellow signs have been purchased and are being posted around the lake as a reminder.  Please obey the speed limit.  It is not just a suggestion.  Waves from speeders produce a lot of energy that eats away at our shoreline.  Eroding shorelines add sediment to the lake as well as reducing your overall lot size.
Please remind others  you may know to obey the limit.  I am always willing to talk to people about the importance of our limit.  I would also be willing to remind those boaters on the lake as needed.  My problem is that I am watercraft challenged.  So, if you are willing to take me out in your boat, please let me know.
Those of you who have lily pads along your shore are fortunate in that they slow the waves down and help with the erosion issue.  I know that we often look at the lilies as a nuisance but they do have redeeming qualities.

DIGGING IN THE DIRT AND WATER TOO!
I am very excited to inform you about a fall project that the lake association will be undertaking in partnership with the Tippecanoe Watershed Foundation (TWF) and JF New.  The TWF has grant money that was earmarked for another project that won’t be completed by the time the grant expires.  Ridinger Lake is fortunate to be the new recipient of  these funds, a $8,000  grant from IDEM.
To use the money we have put together a project along 400 foot of the East side shore.  Two hundred feet of shoreline on either side of the beach will be planted with native plants.  We will also be able to do the beach project that was discussed this summer.  The beach project will help us retain the sand at the beach by redirecting the runoff from the properties behind it during heavy rains.  The roots of the shoreline plants will help retain the soil by anchoring it. The plants will also increase the overall ecology of the area by bringing in insects, butterflies and birds.  The shade from the plants will give cooler places for the insects in the water and small fry to gather.  The taller plants at the shoreline will discourage the geese and swans from coming ashore here.  The geese do not like to come ashore when there are tall plants they cannot see through.
Overall I am very excited about this project and think it will be great for the lake.  It is not every day that you are gifted with money in this way.  We are fortunate.  I hope this is just the start of restoring and naturalizing our shoreline.
But your help is needed!!  The $8,000 grant is broken down into $6,000 from IDEM and $2,000 in matching money.  The RLPOA can work off a large chunk of the $2,000 (if not all) by helping with the work.  The project needs to be completed by the first of October.  Saturday, September 25th, has been targeted as the day to do the planting.  The beach work will occur prior to that.  We will be planting 900 plants and your help is needed.  Please mark this day on your calendar and help us if at all possible.  Any amount of time you can give will be appreciated and will make a difference.  A few people will not be able to accomplish this.  It will take many hands.  Anyone who can dig and plant is  welcome.  A JF New staff member will be here to direct our work.  Also the plants will be covered with a goose netting to help protect them from the geese and swans until they are established.  Please help us make this happen.

JAM FOR SALE
This summer I made jam with some of the neighborhood kids to raise money for the beach project.  I sold it at a couple of the garage sales I put stuff out at.  I have some left for anyone who is interested.  It is $1.50 for an 8 oz jar.  While supplies last I have:  apricot jam, red raspberry jam, blackberry jelly, no sugar strawberry jam,  blueberry jam, peach jam, and blueberry peach jam.  You can contact me and I will deliver it to you or I will have what is left  at the September meeting.

LAST REMINDERS
We will have a garage sale again next year as a fundraiser so if you would like to start collecting things, donations will be accepted and appreciated.
We were fortunate not to have any spring flooding in 2010.  As you close up your properties for those of you who are not with us year round, please remember to take precautions in case.  Make sure your boats are either above the flood level or tied to their trailers.  Anything that can float away should be secured because it will float away.  Also secure your propane tanks so that they do not tip over.

As always, feel free to contact me about any of the above information.  I can be reached at 574-594-3433 or jodilozier@aol.com.

Hope to see you at the meeting!
